Agroecology refers to the study of agriculture from an ecological perspective. Its basic units of analysis are agricultural ecosystems, approaching agricultural processes in a broad way, not only aiming to maximize production but also to optimize the total agroecosystem - including its sociocultural, economic, technical and ecological components. Currently, the term agroecology can be understood as a scientific discipline, as an agricultural practice or as a social and political movement. In this sense, agroecology does not exist in isolation, but it is an integrating science that aggregates knowledge from other sciences, in addition to adding popular and traditional knowledge from the experiences of family, native and rural farmers. Therefore, the knowledge base of agroecology is constituted through the systematization and consolidation of knowledge and practices, converting traditional empirical knowledge into knowledge with scientific bases and methodologies, aiming at sociodiversity and environmentally sustainable, economically efficient and socially fair agriculture.
